Dog Identification.
To ensure compliance with UK Law, it is recommended that all dogs wear a collar and tag. This is in accordance with the Control of Dogs Order 1992, Section 2. There are a variety of collar types available, but it is important to choose a sturdy one that cannot break apart, break off, or slip off your dog.
Leather collars with buckle clasps are considered to be the best option. This is because they are durable and less likely to come apart. It is also important to have a suitable tag attached to the collar. The tag should include your name, phone number, and address (optional). If your dog becomes lost or is found by someone, having this information on the tag will help to identify the owner and reunite them with their pet.
If you do not have a collar & tag, your pet might be seized, as well as you might get fined (Animal Welfare (Sentencing) Act 2021).
There are some exemptions on why you can leave a collar & tag off your dog, for example: (a) any pack of hounds,
(b) any dog while being used for sporting purposes,
(c) any dog while being used for the capture or destruction of vermin,
(d) any dog while being used for the driving or tending of cattle or sheep,
(e) any dog while being used on official duties by a member of Her Majesty’s Armed Forces or Her Majesty’s Customs and Excise or the police force for any area,
(f) any dog while being used in emergency rescue work, or
(g) any dog registered with the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association.
